What is a "pianist/charmer"?
Someone who brings some personality and creative strategy to the event--not just a body and some sound effects.
I'm a formally educated pianist who can play about four hours of music, non stop.
Classical, standards, pop, blues, stride, jazz-inflected ANYthing, new age, and novelty.
I TALK to my clients, I learn who's attending the function, I find out if there are any meaningful pieces of music that will surprise or delight a special guest.
I take very BRIEF breaks, 5 minutes per hour.
I dress professionally, usually in understated formal wear. And I'm smart enough to know that NO female guest wants her date ogling the artist -- that's the meaning of 'understated.'
I charm guests if they're open to it. I'll chat, invite small children to learn a simple little duet to perform with me, be an entertainer if it's appropriate to the event . I was recently booked to play a secular MEMORIAL and received raves for nailing the whole concept.
I need no handholding, no management at all. I contact the venue myself to make certain the piano is tuned and maintained. I arrive very early, to allow time to correct any last minute surprises.
I have great references.
Basically, I'm the dream pianist: professional, well-groomed, congenial, respectful of the tone of the event. And I PLAY WITH HEART--I'M NEVER PHONING IT IN!
