| Without an officiant, a wedding really wouldn't be a wedding. Officiants are people who have the legal right to marry two people, so they will preside over the actual wedding ceremony and make the union binding and legal. Although some couples may have their own religious personage that they have known for a while, and that they trust, in mind for their big day, some people are not so lucky as to already have someone in mind to officiate.
